Jewellery Detective : Italian Hallmarks

Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the last blog on hallmark identification as we will be building on that more in this blog. In this edition of Jewellery detectives we will be looking at Italian hallmarks in more detail. The good news is Italy actually has quite recognisable marks with a lot of information which makes it easier to look for and decipher!

Starting in 1938 Italian makers were required to stamp an elongated hexagonal frame-shaped stamp with a makers rego number and two regional ID letters on the right.  (show Shapes)

After 1968 they revised the hexagonal shape and added a five pointed star on the left then the makers registration number in the center and the two regional ID letters on the right. Provincial ID letters.

So knowing the star is present means the piece was made after 1968 so already you have some valuable information from one small detail. However be careful the USSR also used a star with a hammer and sickle so don't get them confused.  I have also seen pieces simply stamped 'Italy' and these were often exported to other jewellers across the world to use. Many jewellery houses imported Italian chains due to the incredible quality and craftsmanship.

Let's take a look at some real life examples from the shop including one of the more famous Jewellery dynasties UnoAerre.

Their style and workmanship are very well known with deep roots in the Italian jewellery history. I have been lucky enough to find and share some of their fabulous earrings and necklaces. Their mark is Star 1 AR as they were the first registered goldsmith in ARezzo and even based their name on that with Uno meaning 1. If you would like to learn more about them I have included it in the listing below as both fully hallmarked and available here

I am also lucky enough to have this Vintage Silver collar stamped for Italy ⭐  800 available here

Along with this very special Spiga necklace hallmarked 375 Italy available here

Finally this absolutely darling Snake ring in 18ct 750 and hallmarks for ⭐ 59 AR available here

I hope now when you see a Hallmark like this you will know instantly of its Italian origins. Knowing these hallmarks will make you feel more confident in what you're buying, you can even look up the maker and province when you get home. Knowing something is Italian also means it meets the high standards of an Italian goldsmith and when purchasing jewellery quality is paramount.

Next up I think we will look at some Early Australian Hallmarks as voted by you!

Stay tuned and happy holidays.
